As a Yahoo Ambassador, I'd like to say how impressed I am with the improvements Yahoo has made with their keyword search marketing program. Yahoo associates are very helpful and appear to have their clients best interest at heart. It has taken many of the best parts of the Google adwords program and it some cases made them easier to use.
If you who don't know, YSM (Yahoo Search Marketing) is the pay per click service offered by Yahoo. Formerly known as Overture, there's a search network as well as a content network. Advertising in the search network is easy. You pick the keywords for the products or the services you provide. You write the ad copy to promote your products and services. You determine the maximun amount you want to pay each time your ad is clicked on.
When a potential customer types one of your keywords in the Yahoo search query box you advertising link appears. Your quality index determines where your links are displayed in the search results. The quality index is made up of the advertiser's bid price and ad click-through rate. Pay only when your ad is clicked on.
Since Yahoo gets over 2 billion searches per month it can be an extremely effective marketing tool. Their new geo-targeting feature is what we as marketers have been waiting on. I'm not as happy with it as I'd like to be. It uses what Yahoo calls DMA zones. Although it some cases it can be very effective, for clients that get customers from a smaller area there's too much wasted traffic. Hopefully this is something they will address.
Yahoo Search Marketing analytics has greatly improved. You can now view real-time reports detailing the number of clicks you're recieving so you always know how well your advertising is working.
